The Umred-Pauni-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, situated approximately 50 kilometers from Nagpur and 60 kilometers from Bhandara, spans across Pauni Tahsil in the Bhandara district and Umred, Kuhi, and Bhiwapur Taluka in the Nagpur district. Nestled along the Wainganga River, the sanctuary is intricately connected to the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve. This pristine natural habitat hosts a diverse range of wildlife, making it a significant conservation area.
The sanctuary is located 20 km east of Bhandara town. The nearest rail and airport head is Nagpur. Regular buses at an interval of 30 minutes are available from Bhandara Bus Stand from 5:00 am to 8:00 pm. The sanctuary is open for visitors from sunrise to sunset. There are many hotels and resorts located near Bhandara town.
The sanctuary is flanked by the Wainganga River and the Gose Khurd Dam to the northeast, while the south is bordered by State Highway 9 and Bhiwapur Town. The western boundary is defined by Umred, and a narrow 10-kilometer-long range of hills, with elevations ranging between 600 to 800 meters, envelops the northwest. Notably, it lies just 40 kilometers north of the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, 50 kilometers southwest of Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, and is conveniently situated 60 kilometers from Nagpur, Maharashtra. The Pench Tiger Reserve can be found 80 kilometers to the northwest.
Within the sanctuary, one can encounter breeding tigers, herds of Gaur, wild dogs, and an array of unique fauna such as flying squirrels, pangolins, and honey badgers. The vibrant ecosystem of Umred-Pauni-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary not only showcases the rich biodiversity of the region but also plays a crucial role in preserving the natural heritage of Maharashtra.
